Winnipeg River Learning Centre
The Winnipeg River Learning Centre (WRLC) is a post-secondary education and training institution located in the Town of Powerview-Pine Falls, Manitoba. The Manitoba Model Forest (MBMF) provides support for program implementation and on-going development of training and post- secondary education initiatives in order to provide local communities with access to educational and training opportunities close to home. In particular, First Nations stressed the importance of their community members to remain in their home communities while attending training courses. The WRLC also provides educational and training opportunities for people seeking career changes resulting from facility closures or slowdowns in the resource industry sectors.
The MBMF was a key player in the development of the WRLC concept and continues to provide cash and in-kind funding support to this important regional initiative. The Model Forest office is also housed within the WRLC, which assists in the economic viability of the Centre.
The WRLC offers of training programs in Level 1 Electrical Certificate, Health Care Aide, Human Resource Management, Office Technician, Para-Educator, Early Childhood Education, Non-timber Forest Products (a training program of the MBMF) as well as a variety of small business and office management programs. The WRLC provides other specialty courses and workshops such as Canadian Firearm Safety, digital photography, maple syrup production and mushroom growing. The WRLC has only been in operation since 2008 and new training programs are always being developed to serve the needs identified locally and regionally.
